Book in Advance

Summer weekends and holidays sell out. Book your ferry tickets at least a week ahead during peak season (June–August).

Arrive 30 Min Early

Arrive at the dock at least 30 minutes before departure, especially if you're bringing bicycles or have a large group.

Bringing Your Bike?

Bikes can be transported for an extra fee (~$8–12). Or rent one on the island — it's often more convenient!

Leave Your Car

Cars are not allowed on the island. Leave your vehicle at a paid lot near the ferry dock — most cost $10–20/day.

Dress in Layers

The Straits of Mackinac can be breezy even in summer. Bring a light jacket for the crossing — you'll be glad you did.

The crossing takes approximately 16–20 minutes depending on which company and departure city you choose. Shepler's from Mackinaw City is the fastest at around 16 minutes, while crossings from St. Ignace are slightly shorter due to proximity.
Can I bring my car to Mackinac Island?
No — motorized vehicles have been banned on Mackinac Island since 1898. You must leave your car at a parking lot near the ferry dock (typically $10–20/day). The island is explored by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage.
Do I need to book ferry tickets in advance?
We strongly recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Weekend departures in summer often sell out. All three companies offer online booking. Walk-up tickets are usually available on weekdays in the shoulder season.
